It
is Filipino History Month
and there is a nice display in the IMC. Tagalog
is now being taught and Chris Manasala’s
class have been into the IMC exploring the
Filipino History Collection that Sue Dela Cerna
has worked so hard to put together. Encourage
your students to explore it as well. Stay tuned,
there may be a Filipino Club activity coming
up to recognize the month.
It
is Teen Read Week, a National
celebration sponsored by the American Library
Association to promote Teen Reading and their
theme this year is “Slammin”–
- - so Bethel’s “SLAMMIN’”
with 3 great activities:
-
Book Club “book talks”
in English classes
-
“Catch Someone Reading”
photo contest (see flyers for details)
-
A
Poetry Club “Slam” at
lunch on Thursday, October 24.
Remind
your kids during SSR, that it is Teen Read
Week every week, and the advantages they will
get from their free reading are great! Here
are some examples:
-
Increased
vocabulary
-
Better writing skills
-
Better reading skills, because they
will be practicing daily
-
Better grades, because with better
reading comes better understanding
of different subjects
Research
Ideas for the Month: Have students
tap their creative juices with some fun assignments
related to Halloween or Filipino History Month.
Students could choose a Filipino book out of
the collection and give a short preview about
it, they could write a short essay on the Filipino
Culture, or they could research all Hallow’s
Eve or the Day of the Dead for Halloween. Topics
covered in World Book Encyclopedia online under
the search term “HALLOWEEN” include:
Halloween, Jack-o-Latern, Pumpkin, Turnip,
All Saints Day, Mask, Turnip. Some other rather
obscure topics also came up such as the United
Nations as it was formed on October 24, 1945,
and Houdini, as he died on October 31st, 1926,
so have some fun with it. There are obvious
applications for many elective areas including
art and foods, and I hope you will share your
creative ideas with the IMC.
IMC
CLASS PROJECTS:
-
All 9th grade English classes have
been in for their “Scavenger
Hunt” orientation to the IMC.
-
The
Tagalog Classes have been in for
an overview orientation and were
assigned a project to report on books
in our Filipino History Collection.
-
· ESL classes have been in
working on a research project about
the origins of their names.
-
· All English Classes have
had students come in to select outside
reading novels/biographies.
-
Geography classes have been learning
the BIG6© for Information Problem
Solving research process, with a
focus on how to take notes as they
complete their first research assignment.
The assignment is either the dying
sun and it’s effects on earth
or Kaz, a planet students create
using characteristics found in other
planets in our solar system.

| NEW
BOOKS: We received our latest
order of new books mid-September
with lots of great fiction titles
– repeats on students’
favorites, and some great new
titles. These books are all
Accelerated Reader (AR) books
with the new software so English
teachers can test their students
one or two of their 6 outside
reading novels to cut down on
the amount of paperwork needed
to have students show that they
have read the books. The funding
was provided by II/USP at the
end of last year.
If you would like to see our end-of-year
(2002-2003) library report,
you can download this MSWORD
DOC by clicking on the link.
TEACHERS! Please
alert JFK and ME (Mary Poeck) about research assignments.
It is difficult to be as prepared if we are surprised by assignments.
Also please talk about research with me before assigning topics.
We can presearch and provide a more successful experience
for all! |
| COMING SOON: our
OPAC (online card catalog) will be accessible on the web --
so students can use it from your classroom!! |
