Chemistry Guidelines
Welcome to Chemistry! This is the branch of science that I
find most interesting. I hope you enjoy all that we are about
to do. We will be working together to explore how matter behaves
and changes in both a qualitative and quantitative way. I am
looking forward to our year together. Chemistry is a laboratory
based science course for students who are interested in science
and plan to go to college. Their choice of college might be either
a 2 or 4 year school. Students with other goals in mind might
also take this course because they have a strong interest in
science.
Behavior Requirements: As upperclassmen, I am sure
you realize that this classroom requires special behavior --
just as church, courtroom, or offices require special behavior.
Students will:
1. Use appropriate classroom behaviors at all times. If what
you are doing disrupts the learning enviornment, it is not appropriate
classroom behavior.
2. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before you speak.
3. Respect everyone in the classroom.
4. Be in class on time and come prepared to work and learn
each day; Bring your pencils, pen, and notebook every day.
5. Follow all laboratory directions and safety rules. Do not
touch any equipment or chemicals without my permission.
6. Food, drinks, or gum chewing are not allowed in this classroom.
As the year progresses, I will give you more specific rules
regarding safety during activities. I will enforce all school
rules in the classroom and around the campus. Please make sure
you are familiar with the district Code of Conduct.
Consequences:
1. Class disrupter will be warned once. Additional consequences
will be assigned as needed. Parents will be contacted whenever
needed.
2. Additional Consequences: Counselor and Vice-principal conferences
may be held as needed. If you fail to complete your assigned
consequences, your parent will be contacted. Parent conferences
will be a part of any serious disciplinary action.
Attendance: Our best learning time is when we work
together in class. It is essential that you be here (and on time)
to participate in all the work of our class each day.
Your Grade: There are two categories of work in this
class, classwork and tests, that make up your grade. You will
earn your grade from your efforts on the work of our class. You
will be graded on tests, quizzes, labs, classwork, use of skills,
and homework. Often you will work with a partner in a team on
the lab and classwork portion of this class. You will be expected
to be an active part of of any lab team you are assigned to.
Part of your learning in this class is how to work in a group
with persons you may not know to produce work as a team. The
other part of your grade will be based on your individual test
scores. Your grade will be based on the number of points you
earn throughout the grading period compared to the total number
of points possible. Classwork, homework, labs, use of skills,
and notebooks make up 50% of your grade. Tests will make up the
other 50% of your grade.
Grading Scale:
- A 100-90 -- Awesome
- B 89-80 -- Brilliant
- C 79-70 -- Congratulations
- D 69-60 -- Danger zone -- but keep trying
- F 59 down -- Frankly, I don't even want to think about it!
Quality of Work: I expect your work to be neat and
organized. You will need a three ring binder for your work in
this class ONLY. You should use BLUE or BLACK ink for assignments.
All work should be on 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch binder paper. I will
not accept folded papers of half-sheets of paper.
To be successful in this class, do all the work on time
and always do your best.
Lab and Test Make-UP: Lab work is an essential part
of this course. If you miss a lab or a test you will need to
make up the lab after school on Thursday. You will normally need
to make up the work the week you miss it. No points are earned
for labs that are not made up.
Homework: The course will require the student to study
about 30 minutes each night. You should expect homework every
night. Homework is due at the start of the period. The only "late"
papers I will accept for full credit are from students with excused
absences or passes. If you are absent you need to turn in your
work within three days of your return to school. Late work on
major assignments is subject to a loss of a grade each day it
is late. No credit is available if the assignment is turned in
after the class set has already been corrected and returned.
On nights when there is no formal homework assignment, you should
review concepts or vocabulary or work on your notebook. Keep
your assignment sheet up to date at all times. Parent Alert:
Your student should be making regular, if not daily, entrees
on the assignment table. You can check the assignment table to
monitor your student's progress.
Sustained Silent Reading (SSR): Reading is a key academic
skill. JBHS SSR class will be held each day and your work in
SSR will be part of your grade in this class. You will need to
bring a book each day to read during SSR.
Textbooks: Your book is expensive. A paper bag cover
works great and helps conserve trees by recycling. You are responsible
for your textbook and will be charged for any damage or loss
(don't loan your book to others!). Please take care of your book.
(They cost $65 to replace).
Bring the following each day:
- 1. Your textbook
- 2. Two number 2 pencils and a blue or black pen
- 3. White binder paper and some graph paper
- 4. Your science binder (notebook)
- 5. A calculator with scientific notation capabilities
- 6. A positive learning attitude
- I am looking forward to our year together. I am sure it will
be a great one.
-
- College Requirements: Remember: You are a high school
student. The Grades you earn in this class will become part of
your permanent academic records. Your work in this class will
guide your placement in future classes. You must earn a "C"
in this class to have it count towards college admission. Check
the course catalog of the college you are interested in attending
to make sure you are taking the courses you need. Also be aware
your GPA is important in college admission decisions.
