Jesse Bethel TA Policy will support, sustain, and protect District, school and teacher goals and expectations as outlined in the District Behavior Code, Jesse Bethel Student Handbook and Teacher's Manual.

TA qualifications and responsibilties shall be determined by the Administration, Counselors, and Teachers. Specific departments that utilize TAs will address their needs in their application and interview of the student considering a TA position.

Areas of Concern for ALL Students to be considered for a TA position:

I. Attendance History and Record

A. Unexcused and excessive absences and tardies need to be considered in recommending a student.

II. Academic Record

A. A student's academic progress shall represent at least a C average or above.
B. The student's past report card may be used as an indicator
C. A TA class is not an acceptable CSF class.

III. Behaviora Record

A. The teacher should check the student's behavior record through the Assistant Principal's Office or the Counselor's Office
B. The TA is expected to model the District and School Rules Conduct Code as outlined in the Student Handbook and District Guidelines at ALL times.
C. Frequency of Referrals to the AP's Office will be considered
D. Students in Specific Academic Programs on Campus will be checked out by the Teacher and Assistant Para Educators in that program.

1. If a student is in a program that requires one-on-one supervision at all times then the Administration, Program Specialist, Counselor, Parent and Teacher shall determine if a TA position is beneficial for a specific student.

IV. Grade Level

A. Only students of 11th and 12th grade credits earned will be considered for a TA class

1. There are, however, extenuating circumstances that may admit a lower classman into a TA class at the discretion of Administration, Counselor, Teacher and Parent.
2. Only 1 TA class during a semester or year is allowed
3. The TA is assigned to a specific teacher for the whole year.
4. Rarely is a TA assigned only for a semester.
5. A TA class is NOT AN ACCEPTABLE CSF class.

V. Teacher, Counselor, Office Manager Responsibility

A. Create a TA Policy specific to your needs and course incorporating the school guidelines.

1. Make sure the Vice Principal, Assistant Principal, and Counselors have a copy of your TA Policy. (Update and Revise as needed)
2. When students request a TA class, the staff member will be able to refer to your policy on file.
3. An interview by the teacher, counselor, office manageer or administrator is Mandatory.
4. Hasty decisions do not guarentee a reliable and dependable TA
5. Some staff members use a contract that the student signs. If this is the case, a copy of the contract should be on file with the Vice Principal

B. TA conduct in class, on campus or in the office

1. TAs should have on their persons their student ID card and some form of identification from the Teacher & Period at all times.
2. If it is reported to the Teacher that a TA was inappropriately behaving then the Teacher is expected to assign a consequence.

C. TA Dismissal

1. Academic requirements, attendance, behavior and other extenuating circumstances could dictate that a student needs a change in schedule.
2. Probationary status might be used in some situations.

D. Teacher Responsibilities that TAs are NOT RESPONSIBLE for:

1. Taking Attendance
2. Signing Attendance Sheets
3. Assigning consequences to students.

VI. TAs are to exhibit exemplary behavior at ALL times.

A. TAs should respect all Jesse Bethel staff or personnel

1. Any adult staff member could request that a TA act in an appropriate manner
2. TAs are expected to support the Teacher's expectations and goals
3. Students on campus should see a TA as a model of mature, young adult who willingly assists the teacher and supports the goals of the school.

VII. Some departments, courses, and offices require more than one TA.TA assignment limitations are outlined below:

A. Classroom Teacher is allowed 1 TA per class period
B. Main Office is allowed 2 TAs per class period
C. A.P. Office is allowed 1 TA per class period
D. Attendance Office is allowed at least 2 TAs per period
E. Counseling Office - Head Counselor and Administrative Decision
F. IMC - IMC Clerk and/or Librarian and Administrative Decision
G. P.E., Electives & Science is allowed no more than 2 TAs per period.

VIII. TA Application and Interview

A. Each teacher, counselor, office manager or clerk is required to create and design their own application and interview process and give a copy of the application form, including interview questions, with the Vice Principal and Counselors no later than the second week of the beginning of the school or academic year.

B. Counselors need to have specific information about a teacher's course, required responsibilties before assigning a student as a TA (asap) and preferably before school starts. A description of TA responsibilties will be included in the course catalog when students consider a TA class in the Spring of each year.
