COMPETENCY: The student will write a literary analysis of a self-selected, teacher-approved work of fiction. At least one rough draftmust be submitted before the final draft. The final draft should include:
EXAMPLE ESSAY AVAILABLE FROM THE TEACHER ON THE ALICE WALKER NOVEL THE COLOR PURPLE.
Important : Be sure to have your book finished well ahead of the dates the assignments are due. This might mean spending extra time outside of class to read it completely. THIS SHOULD NOT BE DIFFICULT, SINCE DURING THIS TIME THIS OUTSIDE READING WILL BE YOUR ONLY REAL HOMEWORK IN ENGLISH. While you are reading, remember to complete your Outside Reading Log for additional points.
Books must be approved in advance by the teacher. No changes to your reading choice may be made within the last week before the written analysis is due (March 4 is the last day you can switch your choice).
All of the assignments leading up to the drafts of the essay are designed to help you build the kind of writing you need in order to pass this competency. If you neglect these smaller assignments, you will have a hard time finishing the final draft in a competent way.
